Mesothelioma Claimants To Be Supported By Faster Legal Process
Helen Grant, Courts Minister, has proposed the creation of an out-of-court process to be implemented specifically to settle compensation claims for victims of mesothelioma – an industrial disease which often develops decades after the sufferer has been exposed to asbestos. Approximately 2,200 people die from the disease in the UK each year, with symptoms often developing 30-40 years after asbestos exposure.
The proposal would enable victim, or their lawyer, to quickly settle uncontested claims with the insurers of their former employers, and will be used for cases where the victim knows where they were exposed to asbestos. A similar process has been used in recent years for victims of road traffic accidents.
Talking to the Ministry of Justice, Ms Grant said: "Mesothelioma is an awful condition which can destroy lives in a frighteningly short amount of time and we want to do everything we can to help sufferers and their families. The improved out-of-court process will help to ensure they can access any compensation they are due as quickly as possible."
